Capes. Yea or Nay?

Now that winter is winding down, it's time (for me at least!) to think about cheap, now-on-sale outerwear that's thrown into the clearance section to make room for the new spring clothes. (As a poor college student I need to keep track of these things.) I already found my boyfriend a fantastic $20 black double-breasted peacoat at Old Navy (full price = almost $80!!) And now I'm moving on to myself.

I trend that I've been seeing lately is the cape. When I first saw them on the runways I was pretty indifferent towards them, didn't love it, didn't hate it, but now I'm putting a lot more thought into this possibility. There is something positively whimsical, mysterious, but also vintage and adorable about them. There are many things I think about when I see a cape being used for outerwear...

CAPES Throughout Time: I think of Victorian capes, (as well as mufflers and Christmas Carolers), 1950s British police officers, fairytales like Little Red Riding Hood, ladies from the 1950s, superheroes (of course), and lastly Sherlock Holmes! Who wouldn't want to be associated with the incredibly intelligent and sharp Mr. Holmes?

From Burberry's Fall 2011 runway show:
An interesting take on the cape: made clear and used as a raincoat!

More Burberry...

A few past runway looks.. I love Sonia Rykiel's version. It's asymmetrical and has
quirky angles.

Some weheartit.com cape love.

Here we have streetstyle capes via FaceHunter and, I believe, The Satorialist.

Lastly, here is the kind of cape I would LOVE, from ASOS. There is
something very romantic about it!

I can't help but let all of my dreamy preconceptions and fairytale thoughts affect my decision towards liking/not liking the cape. What do you think? Would you go for the cape when it gets cold again?
