What a collection of photographs I have to share with you all today! I'm so excited to watch the Oscars tomorrow night, I just can't stop thinking about it! Here are the movie posters for the 10 films nominated for Best Picture. Make sure you look at the descriptions below for more details on the poster graphics, since they are all different.
Browsing around for these really made me wonder, who creates these posters? Who decides what goes on the poster, and how did they decide what successfully personifies the movie & makes the public want to go see the film? It is up for you to judge which poster is the most effective and which movie did it best!
Almost every single poster is all artsy-fartsy and epic-looking. But an edgy, captivating photo is exactly what I love...

The Importance of the Blazer.
The blazer is not one of The Classic Ten, but I feel like it should be added as an honorary member. The blazer has developed into a true necessity for every women's closet, and has grown from strictly business attire to true fashion. I own at least 4 or 5 blazers of different styles, (the one pictured below is my "new" brown blazer inherited from my mother). Then I realized after looking today, that the majority of the "outfit pictures" that are in the Inspiration folder on my desktop, show people in blazers. I was so surprised to see this commonality... it was then that I realized... I'm in love with blazers.

Happy V-Day & Plastic Joy.
I hope everyone has a lovely valentine's day! I've decided to combine this well-wishing post with the Plastic Joy Award, since it is also romantic in nature. If you haven't heard of Plastic Joy, it is when you dedicate a post to 5 or more fictional gentlemen who you would like to... have romantic altercations with, I suppose one could say. Miss Glamoretta passed this award to all of her readers, so why not? Trust me, it was very fun looking up these pictures for the post... very fun. Enjoy! {p.s. click movie titles for trailers!}

The Classic Ten: The Cashmere Sweater (#5)
"The black cashmere turtleneck is a perfect garment."
-David Mamet
I know I've become a little distracted from the Classic Ten series, but we aren't done yet! In fact, we are halfway there. Next up is the lovely, luxurious cashmere sweater. I have personally never owned a 100% cashmere sweater, though my mom does. For some reason, when I used think of cashmere I thought of older people, not to say my mom is old, but I usually associated it with a more mature crowd. Well, after reading this chapter in Nancy MacDonell Smith's The Classic Ten, I'm feeling more appreciative of this fiber. Then, I've also started thinking that cashmere is taken for granted a little bit and isn't mentioned enough as a wardrobe necessity.

US versus UK: Magazine Covers, Feburary 2011
I feel like I haven't done enough of what my header tagline specifies this blog to be: Abroad look at fashion & design. Meaning, I'm supposed to be focusing on specifically European influences (mainly from across the pond) and things of that nature. So I've come up with an idea that will guarantee that I will do my own mission statement every month!
Since I'm working to go into the magazine business, specifically in design, and the fact that I love creative, graphic and dynamic magazine covers, I'm going to compare the US version to the UK version of many different magazine covers and pick my favorite between the two. Then pick the best cover of the month out of all of them! This is based solely on the cover, not the content. Design, typography, photograph, how well it draws a reader in, placement, white space, etc. I know my opinion could mean absolutely nothing and some might disagree with me, but it's just for fun! And I would like to hear all of your opinions. Plus, it's just nice to be able to see ALL of these different covers every month without having to search to see who is on what and what the covers all look like. SO, here we go:
ps. US version is always on the left & UK version on the right.
1. VOGUE
Vogue US: It's very odd seeing Kristen Stewart on the cover of Vogue isn't it? I'm so used to her being in tabloids or tween magazines. Her eyes seem a little alien-y to me, and I'm not sure what her hair is up to, or when she went blonde... but it doesn't look bad necessarily! I might like the light color. The type looks really clean and the red really works.
Vogue UK: It's a little boring to me. Victoria Beckham has been on a ton of magazine covers in her lifetime, and it's like they ran out of ideas. My favorite Vogue cover of her was her April 2008 look, which was soft, yet very dynamic. I can understand if they were going for a cozy, comfort look, and she looks gorgeous... but the cover is a little bland.
WINNER: Vogue US. With the bold, red text and Kristen Stewart's new "vogue" look, I find her cover more visually interesting.

The Hollywood Issue.
My boyfriend is a HUGE movie buff (he has a double major in Film Studies), and it's beginning to rub off on me. The King's Speech was amazing and I loved The Social Network. This year really was full of amazing films. Anyway, this is a fashion & design blog not a film blog! So here is Vanity Fair's "Hollywood Issue" cover photographed by Norman Jean Roy. It features 14 of "the most exciting actors and actresses of the moment" (Vanity Fair.com) in a very glamourous old hollywood portrait with Robert Duvall serving them behind the bar. What is it about celebrities that make a photograph so interesting? Oh yeah, they're famous.
