Anyone remember the days when having perfect, stick-thin hair was the popular thing to do? I could never do it-- my mane during a major of my adolescence was absolutely uncontrollable. Luckily nowadays having tons of volume in your hair is the new thing. And this is a trend I can fully support. Having big, voluptuous hair is beautiful. It goes back to the 1960s when girls backcombed their hair like Jackie O, placing pill box hats carefully on the crown.
Although the invention of "bumpits" really freak me out--having a contraption in your hair just seems wrong--I try and achieve hair with full body by blow-drying with a big round brush every time I wash my hair, and with products. I currently use CHI's Volume Booster, and always seal in a hairstyle with hairspray. (Dove specifically, because it always smells nice!) If my hair is just NOT cooperating, then a little teasing with a backcomb brush usually helps.
